      Album Details

"First Impression" is a captivating jazz album by Ukrainian pianist and composer Misha Alperin, released in 1999 under the prestigious ECM Records label. This album marks the first recorded collaboration between Alperin and the renowned British reedman John Surman, creating a unique blend of Nordic and contemporary jazz influences. The album features a stellar lineup, including Arkady Shilkloper on French horn and flugelhorn, Terje Gewelt on double-bass, Jon Christensen on drums, and Hans-Kristian Kjos Sørensen on percussion.

Recorded in December 1997 at the iconic Rainbow Studio in Oslo, "First Impression" is a testament to the rich musical dialogue between Alperin and Surman. The album's nine tracks, spanning 44 minutes, offer a diverse range of compositions that showcase the artists' virtuosity and creative synergy. From the evocative "Overture" to the intricate "Fifth Impression," each piece is a masterclass in improvisation and composition, highlighting the musicians' deep understanding of jazz and classical traditions.

The album's standout tracks include the hauntingly beautiful "Twilight Hour" and the dynamic "City Dance," both of which demonstrate the ensemble's ability to seamlessly blend melodic and rhythmic complexity. "First Impression" is a must-listen for jazz enthusiasts and anyone seeking a rich, immersive musical experience.

      About Misha Alperin

Misha Alperin, born Michail Jefimowitsch Alperin, was a Soviet-Norwegian jazz pianist renowned for his introspective and cerebral approach to music. Born in Ukraine in 1956 and raised in rural Moldavia, Alperin began his musical journey with classical training, which he completed in 1976. He later transitioned to jazz and improvisation, becoming a key member of the acclaimed Moscow Art Trio. Alperin's music is characterized by its atmospheric quality, often incorporating Jewish and Romanian folk themes, and his compositions are known for their stark and terse realizations. Throughout his career, he recorded extensively for ECM, fitting the label's image of northern-European melancholy. Alperin's work as a pianist, composer, and improviser left a lasting impact on the jazz world, and he passed away in Oslo in 2018 at the age of 61. His legacy continues to inspire with its depth, creativity, and emotional resonance.
