      Album Details

Dimitri Ashkenazy, a renowned clarinetist, presents a captivating collection of clarinet concertos with his album "Finzi, Copland & Taneyev: Clarinet Concertos." Released in July 2014 under the Paladino Music label, this chamber music album offers a rich and diverse listening experience, spanning a total of 61 minutes.

The album features a selection of works by three prominent composers: Gerald Finzi, Aaron Copland, and Sergei Taneyev. Dimitri Ashkenazy masterfully interprets these pieces, showcasing his exceptional skill and musicality. The Cincinnati Philharmonia Orchestra, conducted by Christoph Mueller, accompanies him, providing a lush and supportive backdrop for the clarinet's expressive lines.

The album opens with Finzi's Clarinet Concerto, a lyrical and introspective work that highlights the clarinet's warm and singing qualities. Copland's Clarinet Concerto in C Minor, Op. 31, follows, offering a more dramatic and virtuosic display. This concerto is presented in three distinct movements: I. Allegro vigoroso, II. Adagio, ma senza rigore, and III. Rondo. Allegro giocoso. The album also includes Copland's Clarinet Concerto in E-Flat Major and Taneyev's Canzona for Clarinet and String Orchestra in F Minor, both of which provide further opportunities for Ashkenazy to demonstrate his technical prowess and musical sensitivity.

Throughout the album, Ashkenazy's playing is characterized by its clarity, precision, and deep expressive power. His interpretations are both respectful of the composers' intentions and infused with his own unique artistic vision. The Cincinnati Philharmonia Orchestra provides excellent support, with Mueller's conducting ensuring a cohesive and engaging performance.

"Finzi, Copland & Taneyev: Clarinet Concertos" is a testament to Dimitri Ashkenazy's artistry and his commitment to exploring the rich repertoire of clarinet concertos. This album is a must-listen for fans of classical music and chamber music enthusiasts alike, offering a captivating journey through some of the most beautiful and challenging works in the clarinet concerto repertoire.
