      Album Details

Indulge in the rich tapestry of chamber music with "Erwin Schulhoff - Richard Strauss: Six to Seven," a captivating album released by Paladino Music in 2012. This exquisite collection features the works of Erwin Schulhoff, an Austro-Czech composer and pianist known for his innovative contributions to the classical music scene. The album is a harmonious blend of Schulhoff's String Sextet, Op. 45, and Richard Strauss's "Metamorphosen," arranged for string septet, offering a unique listening experience that spans nearly 50 minutes.

The album opens with the energetic "Allegro risoluto" from Schulhoff's String Sextet, Op. 45, setting a dynamic tone that carries through the subsequent movements: the serene "Tranquillo: Andante," the spirited "Burlesca: Allegro molto con spirito," and the contemplative "Molto adagio." Each piece showcases Schulhoff's mastery of composition and his ability to evoke a range of emotions through intricate string arrangements.

Complementing Schulhoff's works is Strauss's "Metamorphosen," a profound piece originally written for 23 solo strings, here masterfully arranged for string septet. This addition enriches the album with a deeper layer of musical depth and historical significance, making it a standout piece in the collection.

Performed by the Hyperion Ensemble, this album is a testament to the ensemble's skill and the enduring appeal of these classical masterpieces. Whether you're a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, "Erwin Schulhoff - Richard Strauss: Six to Seven" promises a rewarding and enriching experience.

      About Erwin Schulhoff

Erwin Schulhoff, born in Prague in 1894, was a pioneering Czech composer and pianist whose career was tragically cut short by the Nazi regime. A true innovator, Schulhoff was one of the first European composers to embrace jazz, incorporating dance forms like ragtime, tango, and foxtrot into his piano works. His music is known for its adventurous and muscular qualities, reflecting his wide range of influences and forward-thinking approach. Despite his premature death in the Wülzburg concentration camp in 1942, Schulhoff's compositions continue to captivate audiences with their power and variety. His legacy as a composer who was ahead of his time endures, making his music a compelling exploration of 20th-century musical evolution.
