      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the timeless elegance of classical piano with Walter Gieseking's "Encores: Chopin, Scarlatti, Scriabin, Debussy…," a captivating collection released on March 18, 2023, by Warner Classics. This exquisite album spans a rich tapestry of compositions from some of the most revered names in classical music, offering a diverse and enchanting journey through the centuries.

The album kicks off with the delicate and introspective "Sonata in D Minor, Kk. 9 'Pastorale'" by Domenico Scarlatti, followed by a series of Scarlatti's keyboard sonatas that showcase Gieseking's mastery of Baroque elegance. The repertoire then transitions seamlessly into the romantic era with works by Mozart, Debussy, and Chopin, each piece performed with a nuanced touch that brings out the unique character of every composition.

Debussy's enchanting "Suite bergamasque" and the whimsical "Golliwog's Cakewalk" from "Children's Corner" are standout moments, highlighting Gieseking's ability to capture the essence of French impressionism. The album also features beloved works by Schumann, Mendelssohn, and Grieg, adding depth and variety to the listening experience.

Chopin's "Berceuse" and "Barcarolle" are performed with a sensitivity that underscores Gieseking's deep connection to the Romantic repertoire, while Scriabin's "Preludes" and "Poems" add a touch of early 20th-century innovation. The inclusion of Grieg's "Lyric Pieces" and Mendelssohn's "Songs Without Words" further enriches the album, providing a delightful blend of lyrical and virtuosic elements.

With a total duration of 1 hour and 6 minutes, this album is a testament to Walter Gieseking's enduring legacy as a pianist of unparalleled skill and artistry. Whether you're a seasoned classical enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, "Encores: Chopin, Scarlatti, Scriabin, Debussy…" promises an unforgettable experience, showcasing the timeless beauty of classical piano music.

      About Walter Gieseking

Walter Gieseking, born in Lyon, France, in 1895, was a prodigious and intuitive pianist whose career spanned the early 20th century, leaving an indelible mark on the classical music world. Recognized for his subtle touch, exquisite pedaling, and masterful dynamic control, Gieseking's interpretations of works by Classical, Romantic, and early 20th-century composers, particularly Debussy and Ravel, are legendary. His extensive recordings, including nearly all of Mozart's solo piano works and the complete published works of Debussy and Ravel available during his lifetime, showcase his extraordinary talent and deep musical insight.

Gieseking's journey began at the age of four when he started playing the piano, quickly making remarkable progress. By 1911, he was studying under the renowned Karl Leimer. His career took off with prolific recording sessions for the German Homochord label between 1923 and 1927, establishing him as one of the most extraordinary pianists of his time.

Beyond his musical prowess, Gieseking was also a composer, adding another dimension to his artistic legacy. His life, however, was marked by tragedy when, in 1955, he and his wife were involved in a bus accident that claimed her life and left him with serious head injuries. Despite this personal loss, Gieseking's contributions to the world of classical piano remain celebrated, making him a timeless figure in the annals of music history.
