      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the captivating world of Maurice Emmanuel, a French composer whose works have stood the test of time. This album, "Emmanuel: Symphonies Nos. 1 and 2," released in 1993 under the Marco-Polo label, offers a unique opportunity to explore the symphonic masterpieces of a composer who remained true to his artistic vision, uninfluenced by the fleeting trends of his era.

The album features the Rhenish Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Leif Segerstam, delivering a powerful and nuanced performance of Emmanuel's Symphony No. 1 in A Major, Op. 18, and Symphony No. 2 in A Major, Op. 25, "Bretonne." The latter is particularly notable for its evocative title, hinting at the rich cultural influences that inspired Emmanuel's compositions. Additionally, the album includes "Le Poème du Rhône, Op. 30," a three-movement work that adds a poetic dimension to the symphonic offerings.

Maurice Emmanuel, born in 1862 and passing away in 1938, was a prolific composer whose oeuvre spanned operas, symphonies, string quartets, and solo piano works. His Symphony No. 1, composed in 1901, and Symphony No. 2, completed in 1960, showcase his evolution as a composer and his ability to blend classical forms with personal expression. The inclusion of "Le Poème du Rhône" further highlights Emmanuel's versatility and his deep connection to the landscapes and stories of his homeland.

This album is a testament to Emmanuel's enduring legacy and offers a glimpse into the musical landscape of early 20th-century France. Whether you are a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a curious newcomer, this recording promises a rewarding listening experience, revealing the depth and beauty of Maurice Emmanuel's symphonic works.
