      Album Details

Dive into the captivating world of Erwin Schulhoff's "Concertos," a stunning collection of chamber music that showcases the composer's unique voice and innovative spirit. Released on May 27, 2014, this album is a testament to Schulhoff's mastery of form and his ability to blend classical traditions with modern influences.

The album opens with Schulhoff's Piano Concerto No. 2, Op. 43, a work that spans a range of tempos and moods, from the contemplative "Molto sostenuto" to the lively "Allegro alla jazz." This concerto is followed by the Double Concerto for Flute & Piano, Op. 63, a piece that highlights Schulhoff's skill in writing for multiple soloists against a rich orchestral backdrop. The album also features the Concerto for String Quartet & Wind Ensemble, a work that demonstrates Schulhoff's ability to write for a diverse range of instruments and ensembles.

In addition to these major works, the album includes the "Rondo a capriccio in G Major, Op. 129, 'Rage Over a Lost Penny,'" an arrangement by Schulhoff himself that showcases his wit and musical ingenuity. Throughout the album, the performances are impeccable, with the Leipziger Streichquartett, Jacques Zoon, and Roland Kluttig, among others, bringing Schulhoff's music to life with precision and passion.

Erwin Schulhoff, an Austro-Czech composer and pianist, was a pivotal figure in the generation of European musicians who successfully bridged the gap between classical and modern music. His works often reflect his interest in jazz and other contemporary styles, making his music both historically significant and immediately engaging.

This album is a perfect introduction to Schulhoff's concertos, offering a rich and varied sampling of his work. Whether you're a longtime fan of chamber music or a newcomer to the genre, "Concertos" is sure to captivate and inspire. With a duration of just over an hour, it's an ideal way to spend an afternoon or evening, immersing yourself in the beautiful and innovative music of Erwin Schulhoff.

      About Erwin Schulhoff

Erwin Schulhoff, born in Prague in 1894, was a pioneering Czech composer and pianist whose career was tragically cut short by the Nazi regime. A true innovator, Schulhoff was one of the first European composers to embrace jazz, incorporating dance forms like ragtime, tango, and foxtrot into his piano works. His music is known for its adventurous and muscular qualities, reflecting his wide range of influences and forward-thinking approach. Despite his premature death in the Wülzburg concentration camp in 1942, Schulhoff's compositions continue to captivate audiences with their power and variety. His legacy as a composer who was ahead of his time endures, making his music a compelling exploration of 20th-century musical evolution.
