      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the rich tapestry of Romantic chamber music with the Alban Berg Quartett's captivating 1991 release, "Dvorák & Smetana: String Quartets." This exquisite collection showcases the ensemble's mastery and the profound compositions of two Czech giants, Antonín Dvořák and Bedřich Smetana.

The album opens with Dvořák's String Quartet No. 12 in F Major, Op. 96, affectionately known as the "American" quartet, composed during the composer's sojourn in the United States. The quartet's four movements, from the lively "Allegro ma non troppo" to the spirited "Finale. Vivace ma non troppo," are imbued with the vibrant energy and expansive melodies that Dvořák absorbed from his American experiences, offering a unique blend of European sophistication and New World exuberance.

The second half of the album is devoted to Smetana's String Quartet No. 1 in E Minor, "From My Life." This deeply personal work is a musical autobiography, with each movement reflecting significant experiences from the composer's life. The quartet's emotional journey, from the impassioned "Allegro vivo appassionato" to the introspective "Largo sostenuto," culminates in a poignant finale that leaves a lasting impression.

Recorded in 1991 and released under the Warner Classics label, this album is a testament to the Alban Berg Quartett's exceptional artistry and their ability to bring out the depth and nuance of these timeless works. With a total runtime of 54 minutes, the album offers a concise yet comprehensive exploration of these two masterpieces, making it an essential addition to any classical music enthusiast's collection.
