Dvorak / Glazunov: Violin Concertos - Nathan Milstein

      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the captivating world of classical violin concertos with Nathan Milstein's "Dvorak / Glazunov: Violin Concertos." This exquisite album, released on October 6, 2003, under the Naxos label, showcases Milstein's virtuosity and deep connection with the music of Antonín Dvořák and Alexander Glazunov.

The album features a stunning selection of works, including Dvořák's Violin Concerto in A Minor, Op. 53, B. 108, performed with precision and passion. The concerto is divided into three movements: the lively "Allegro ma non troppo," the serene "Adagio ma non troppo," and the spirited "Finale. Allegro giocoso, ma non troppo." Additionally, the album includes Glazunov's Violin Concerto in A Minor, Op. 82, recorded live, with its four movements—"Moderato," "Andante sostenuto," "Tempo I," and "Allegro"—each offering a unique blend of intensity and grace.

Complementing these concertos are two shorter pieces: Mozart's "Adagio in E Major, K. 261" and "Rondo in C Major, K. 373," both performed with Milstein's signature elegance and technical brilliance. The entire album spans approximately one hour, providing a rich and fulfilling listening experience.

Nathan Milstein, renowned for his exceptional artistry and profound interpretations, brings these works to life with a level of mastery that has solidified his place among the greatest violinists of the 20th century. Whether you are a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album offers a timeless collection of violin concertos that will captivate and inspire.

      About Nathan Milstein

Nathan Milstein, born in Odessa in 1904, was a virtuoso violinist whose career spanned over six decades, leaving an indelible mark on the classical music world. Known for his silken tone, superb technique, and stylish phrasing, Milstein was particularly celebrated for his interpretations of J.S. Bach's unaccompanied violin sonatas and works from the Romantic repertoire. His career began under the tutelage of the renowned Leopold Auer in St. Petersburg and flourished after he left Russia in 1925, touring Europe with his friend Vladimir Horowitz. Milstein's recordings, which include masterful performances of concertos by Beethoven, Brahms, Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky, and Bruch, are testament to his ceaseless search for fresh interpretations and his seemingly inexhaustible reservoir of fingerings. His humanity and purity of playing set him apart, earning him the title of "probably the most nearly perfect violinist of his age" by Harold C. Schonberg of the New York Times. Milstein's legacy endures through his extensive discography and the enduring influence of his artistry on generations of violinists.
