      About Johnny Hodges

      Johnny Hodges, born on July 25, 1907, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, was an American alto saxophonist renowned for his exquisite tone and expressive playing. He is best known for his illustrious career with Duke Ellington's big band, where he served as the lead alto saxophonist for many years. Hodges' distinctive style, developed early in his career, remained a constant source of inspiration throughout his journey in jazz. Alongside Benny Carter, he is celebrated as one of the definitive alto saxophone players of the big band era. Hodges' musical prowess extended beyond the alto saxophone, as he was also featured on the soprano saxophone, although he chose to discontinue playing it after 1940. His authoritative presence and beautiful tone left an indelible mark on the world of jazz, making him a beloved figure in the genre.
