      Franz Doppler, a virtuoso flautist and prolific composer, was a musical powerhouse of the 19th century. Born in Lemberg (now Lviv, Ukraine) on October 16, 1821, Doppler's journey took him from Poland to Hungary, and finally to Vienna, where he served as principal flautist at the Court Opera and later as conductor of the Court Ballet.
