Döhler & Dreyschock: Piano Concertos - Howard Shelley

      Album Details

Howard Shelley, the renowned pianist and conductor, presents a captivating collection of Romantic piano concertos in "Döhler & Dreyschock: Piano Concertos." Released in 2013 under the Hyperion label, this album is part of the esteemed "Romantic Piano Concerto" series, specifically Volume 61. The album features the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, with Shelley himself conducting, creating a harmonious blend of virtuosity and orchestral brilliance.

The album showcases two notable composers of the Romantic era, Ludwig Döhler and Jan Václav Tomášek Dreyschock. The centerpiece is Döhler's Piano Concerto in A Major, Op. 7, a three-movement work that exemplifies the composer's lyrical and dramatic sensibilities. The concerto is complemented by two additional pieces by Döhler: the evocative "Morceau de concert" in C Minor, Op. 27, and the spirited "Salut à Vienne" Rondo brillant, Op. 32, which includes a march-like introduction and a lively rondo.

Shelley's masterful interpretation brings out the depth and nuance of these works, highlighting the technical prowess and expressive range of the piano. The Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra provides a rich and supportive backdrop, enhancing the overall listening experience. With a total duration of 56 minutes, the album offers a concise yet fulfilling journey through the Romantic piano repertoire.

This album is a testament to Howard Shelley's versatility and artistry, both as a pianist and a conductor. It offers a unique opportunity to explore the lesser-known gems of the Romantic era, performed with the highest level of musicality and precision. Whether you are a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album is sure to delight and inspire.
