Devienne: Oboe Sonatas - Francois Devienne

      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the enchanting world of François Devienne's "Oboe Sonatas," a captivating collection of 12 tracks that showcase the brilliance of this 18th-century French virtuoso. Born in 1759, Devienne was not only a renowned bassoonist and flautist but also a composer of remarkable talent, leaving behind a legacy of wind chamber music that continues to resonate with audiences today.

This album, released in 2013 under the Brilliant Classics label, presents a selection of Devienne's most exquisite oboe sonatas, performed with exquisite skill by Burkhard Glaetzner on the oboe, Christine Schornsheim on the fortepiano, and Siegfried Pank on the cello. The sonatas, originally composed in the late 18th century, are brought to life with a sense of grace, formal elegance, and melodic originality that is characteristic of Devienne's style.

The album features three sonatas from Op. 71, each offering a unique blend of musical expression. The Sonata in C Major, Op. 71 No. 3, begins with an "Allegro moderato" that sets a lively pace, followed by an "Adagio" that exudes a sense of calm and introspection. The final movement, "Andante con variazioni. Grazioso," is a delightful display of Devienne's harmonic boldness and melodic inventiveness. The Sonata in D Minor, Op. 71 No. 2, and the Sonata in G Major, Op. 71 No. 1, each offer their own distinct emotional journeys, from the fiery "Allegro con gusto" to the serene "Adagio" and the playful "Rondo poco moderato."

In addition to the Op. 71 sonatas, the album also includes three movements from the Sonata in C Major, Op. 70 No. 1. These pieces, performed with the same level of artistry and precision, further highlight Devienne's mastery of the oboe and his ability to create music that is both technically impressive and deeply moving.

With a total runtime of just over an hour, "Oboe Sonatas" is a testament to the enduring appeal of Devienne's music. Whether you are a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album offers a rich and rewarding listening experience that is sure to delight and inspire.
