      Album Details

Delius: Sea Drift is a captivating album that showcases the exquisite works of Frederick Delius, a renowned British composer. Released on 4 July 2010 by Discover Classical Music, this album is a must-listen for classical music enthusiasts. The tracklist features two of Delius' most notable pieces: Sea Drift, a setting for baritone, chorus, and orchestra of words by Walt Whitman, and Paris - The Song of a Great City, a masterpiece that exemplifies Delius' unique compositional style.

Under the baton of Sir Charles Mackerras, the Welsh National Opera Orchestra and Chorus deliver a stunning performance, bringing Delius' vision to life. The album also features the talented baritone Thomas Hampson, whose powerful vocals add depth and emotion to the music. With a duration of 45 minutes, this album is the perfect introduction to Delius' oeuvre, showcasing his ability to craft beautiful, evocative music that transports listeners to another era.

Frederick Delius' music is characterised by its lush, impressionistic soundscapes, and Sea Drift is no exception. Completed in 1903-04, this work is a testament to Delius' mastery of orchestration and his ability to set words to music in a way that is both poignant and powerful. The album is a testament to the timelessness of Delius' music, and its beauty and emotion continue to inspire and delight audiences to this day.

      About Frederick Delius

Frederick Delius, born into a wealthy mercantile family in Bradford, England, was a composer who defied conventional paths. Rather than following his family's wishes to enter the world of commerce, Delius pursued his passion for music. In 1884, he was sent to Florida to manage an orange plantation, but his heart was not in the business. Instead, he immersed himself in the local music and culture, which significantly influenced his compositions. Returning to Europe in 1886, Delius dedicated himself to his true calling, creating a body of work that reflects his unique experiences and artistic vision.
