      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the enchanting world of Frederick Delius with this captivating album, featuring a collection of his most evocative orchestral works. Released in 2004 by Naxos, this album showcases Delius's unique ability to paint vivid musical landscapes, transporting listeners through the changing seasons and evocative scenes.

The album opens with the lively "Marche Caprice," setting the stage for a journey through Delius's musical imagination. The "3 Small Tone Poems" offer a trio of delicate and expressive pieces, each capturing a distinct mood: the warmth of a "Summer Evening," the tranquility of a "Winter Night," and the freshness of a "Spring Morning." The iconic "Sleigh Ride" adds a touch of whimsy, while "American Rhapsody" brings a taste of the New World to the collection.

Highlights include the pastoral beauty of "A Village Romeo and Juliet: The Walk to the Paradise Garden" and the title track, "On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring," a tone poem that beautifully captures the anticipation and joy of spring's arrival. Paired with its companion piece, "Summer Night on the River," these works showcase Delius's mastery of orchestration and his deep connection to nature.

The album also features lesser-known gems such as "2 Pieces for Small Orchestra," "A Song before Sunrise," and the whimsical "Fantastic Dance." Each piece is performed with exquisite skill by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra under the baton of David Lloyd-Jones, bringing Delius's rich harmonies and evocative melodies to life.

With a total duration of 1 hour and 3 minutes, this album is a treasure trove for fans of orchestral music and those seeking to explore the works of Frederick Delius. Whether you're a seasoned enthusiast or new to Delius's music, this collection offers a rich and rewarding listening experience.

      About Frederick Delius

Frederick Delius, born into a wealthy mercantile family in Bradford, England, was a composer who defied conventional paths. Rather than following his family's wishes to enter the world of commerce, Delius pursued his passion for music. In 1884, he was sent to Florida to manage an orange plantation, but his heart was not in the business. Instead, he immersed himself in the local music and culture, which significantly influenced his compositions. Returning to Europe in 1886, Delius dedicated himself to his true calling, creating a body of work that reflects his unique experiences and artistic vision.
