Delius: Appalachia & The Song of the High Hills - Frederick Delius

      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the evocative soundscapes of Frederick Delius with this captivating album, featuring two of his most atmospheric choral-orchestral works. "Appalachia," composed in 1896, draws inspiration from the haunting melodies of black workers at a tobacco factory, singing an old slave song. Delius masterfully weaves these echoes of the past into a somber and reflective tapestry, showcasing his unique compositional voice.

Complementing "Appalachia" is "The Song of the High Hills," composed in 1912, which transports you to the serene and vast landscapes of Norway. This work is a testament to Delius's ability to capture the essence of a place and translate it into music, with its tranquil and expansive soundscapes.

Conducted by the esteemed Sir Andrew Davis, this recording features the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the BBC Symphony Chorus, delivering a performance that is both powerful and nuanced. The album, released in 2011 by Chandos, spans a duration of one hour and four minutes, providing a rich and immersive listening experience.

Delius's extensive travels served as a significant source of inspiration for his music, and this album is a testament to that influence. Whether you're a longtime fan of Delius or a newcomer to his work, this album offers a compelling introduction to his unique musical language and his ability to evoke vivid imagery through sound.

      About Frederick Delius

Frederick Delius, born into a wealthy mercantile family in Bradford, England, was a composer who defied conventional paths. Rather than following his family's wishes to enter the world of commerce, Delius pursued his passion for music. In 1884, he was sent to Florida to manage an orange plantation, but his heart was not in the business. Instead, he immersed himself in the local music and culture, which significantly influenced his compositions. Returning to Europe in 1886, Delius dedicated himself to his true calling, creating a body of work that reflects his unique experiences and artistic vision.
