      Album Details

Dive into the enchanting world of Claude Debussy with "Debussy: Orchestral Works, Vol. 5," a captivating collection of the composer's lesser-known and unfinished works, beautifully orchestrated by admirers of his genius. This album, released on Naxos in 2011, offers a unique blend of Debussy's distinctive musical style, showcasing his ability to evoke vivid imagery and atmosphere through sound.

The centerpiece of this volume is "La boîte à joujoux" (The Toy Box), a charming children's ballet dedicated to Debussy's daughter. This delightful suite, orchestrated by André Caplet, paints a whimsical picture of a toy shop, a battlefield, and a sheepfold, culminating in a joyful epilogue. The ballet's innocence and playfulness are a testament to Debussy's ability to capture the essence of childhood.

Also included are Debussy's "6 Épigraphes antiques," orchestrated by Ernest Ansermet, which draw inspiration from ancient Greek poetry and mythology. These pieces, ranging from invocations to Pan to dances for an Egyptian, offer a glimpse into Debussy's fascination with the past and his ability to translate ancient texts into evocative musical landscapes.

The album also features orchestral versions of Debussy's piano works "Estampes" and "L'isle joyeuse," arranged by Henri Büsser and Benjamin Molinari, respectively. These arrangements bring new depth and color to Debussy's original compositions, highlighting his mastery of both piano and orchestral writing.

Finally, the album concludes with "Le triomphe de Bacchus," a rare and little-known work orchestrated by Maurice Gaillard. This piece, inspired by the Greek god of wine and ecstasy, showcases Debussy's ability to convey a sense of revelry and abandon through music.

Performed by the Orchestre National de Lyon and conducted by Jun Märkl, this album is a testament to Debussy's enduring influence and the timeless beauty of his music. Whether you're a longtime fan of Debussy or a newcomer to his work, "Debussy: Orchestral Works, Vol. 5" is sure to delight and enchant.

      About Claude Debussy

Claude Debussy, born Achille Claude Debussy, was a pioneering French composer who left an indelible mark on the classical music landscape. Often hailed as the first Impressionist composer, despite his personal rejection of the label, Debussy's innovative approach to harmony and orchestration revolutionized the musical world. His compositions, which span the late 19th and early 20th centuries, are celebrated for their evocative atmospheres and subtle, shimmering textures.
