      Album Details

Dive into the hauntingly beautiful world of Luigi Dallapiccola's "Il Prigioniero" with this captivating 2020 release from Chandos. This choral masterpiece, composed between 1944 and 1948, is a one-act opera that has solidified its place as one of the finest short stage works of the 20th century. The opera, originally a radio opera, was first broadcast in 1949 and has since been celebrated for its lyrical and economical drama.

Conducted by the renowned Gianandrea Noseda, this recording features a stellar cast including Anna Maria Chiuri, Michael Nagy, Stephan Rügamer, Adam Riis, and Steffen Braun, accompanied by the DR Koncertkoret. The album spans 55 minutes and includes six choral works by Michelangelo Buonarotti il Giovane and the fragment "Estate" from Dallapiccola's earlier work.

"Il Prigioniero" is set in 16th-century Spain and tells the story of a dissident Flemish prisoner of the Inquisition, exploring themes of despair, hope, and redemption. The opera's profound narrative is brought to life through Dallapiccola's intricate composition and the powerful performances of the cast. This release is a testament to Dallapiccola's genius and a significant addition to any classical music collection.

      About Luigi Dallapiccola

Luigi Dallapiccola, born in 1904 in Pisino d'Istria, now part of Croatia, was an Italian composer renowned for his unique blend of disciplined twelve-tone technique and deeply emotional expression. His lyrical compositions, often choral, stand out for their warm, evocative qualities, making them standouts in the 20th-century classical music landscape. Dallapiccola's journey began in the culturally rich region of Istria, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and his experiences there deeply influenced his musical language. After studying at the Florence Conservatory, he went on to create a body of work that protests against totalitarianism and celebrates the human spirit, culminating in powerful pieces like "The Prisoner." Dallapiccola's music is not just an auditory experience but a voyage through his personal history and the cultural crossroads of his time. His legacy continues to inspire and move audiences worldwide.
