      Album Details

Dawn Upshaw's 1991 album "Copland: Old American Songs & 12 Poems of Emily Dickinson" is a captivating journey through the musical landscape of Aaron Copland's compositions. This album, released under Warner Classics International, blends the genres of opera, minimalism, and classical music into a cohesive and enchanting collection.

The album features two main sets of songs: "Old American Songs" and "12 Poems of Emily Dickinson." The "Old American Songs" set is divided into two parts, each containing five traditional American folk songs arranged by Copland. These songs showcase the rich tapestry of American musical heritage, with tracks like "Simple Gifts" and "At The River" standing out for their melodic beauty and cultural significance.

The "12 Poems of Emily Dickinson" section is a series of art songs based on the poetry of Emily Dickinson. Dawn Upshaw's ethereal voice brings a delicate and nuanced interpretation to these poems, making them feel both timeless and deeply personal. Tracks like "Nature, the Gentlest Mother" and "The Chariot" highlight the emotional depth and lyrical beauty of Dickinson's poetry, set to Copland's evocative music.

In addition to these sets, the album includes selections from Copland's ballet "Billy the Kid," providing a dynamic contrast to the more introspective songs. The collaboration with Hugh Wolff and the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra adds a layer of richness and depth to the performances, making this album a standout in the classical music repertoire.

With a total duration of 1 hour and 1 minute, this album is a testament to Dawn Upshaw's artistry and the enduring appeal of Copland's music. Whether you're a longtime fan of classical music or a newcomer looking to explore the genre, this album offers a rewarding and enriching listening experience.
