      Album Details

Dive into the rich world of chamber music with Arnold Cooke's "Three String Sonatas," a captivating collection released on Naxos in 2014. This album showcases Cooke's mastery of the genre, featuring three distinct sonatas that highlight the unique qualities of the violin, viola, and cello. Each piece is performed with exquisite skill by an ensemble of talented musicians, including Susanne Stanzeleit, Morgan Goff, Raphael Wallfisch, and Raphael Terroni.

The album opens with the Violin Sonata No. 2, a work that immediately draws the listener in with its lively "Allegro con brio" movement. The sonata's middle movement, "Andante con moto," offers a contrast with its more introspective and melodic character, while the final "Allegro vivace" brings the piece to a vibrant conclusion. The Viola Sonata follows, showcasing the instrument's warm and expressive tone, while the Cello Sonata No. 2 rounds out the collection with its rich and resonant sound.

Arnold Cooke, a prolific composer known for his diverse output, including operas, symphonies, and string quartets, brings his unique voice to these sonatas. His compositions, often described as accessible and engaging, are a testament to his deep understanding of the instruments and his ability to craft compelling musical narratives. This album is a perfect introduction to Cooke's work for those new to his music, as well as a welcome addition to the collections of his existing fans.

With a total duration of just over an hour, "Three String Sonatas" is an album that rewards repeated listening. Each movement offers new discoveries and insights, making it a timeless addition to any chamber music enthusiast's library. The album's high-quality recording and production values ensure that every nuance of the performances is captured, providing an immersive listening experience.
