      Album Details

"Conversation Piece" is a captivating jazz album by Canadian saxophonist Mike Murley, released in January 1996 under Cornerstone Records Inc. Clocking in at just over an hour, this eight-track album showcases Murley's prowess as a tenor saxophonist and composer, with a sound that's been described as hard bop. Joined by a stellar lineup including John MacLeod on trumpet and flugelhorn, Dave Restivo on piano, Jim Vivian on bass, and Ted Warren on drums, Murley delivers a collection of original compositions and a standout cover of Cole Porter's "I've Got You Under My Skin."

Murley's playing is characterized by its technical brilliance and expressive depth, and "Conversation Piece" is no exception. The album opens with the energetic "George Is Gone," setting the tone for the rest of the record. Tracks like "Green Chimneys" and "Greville Bay" highlight Murley's compositional skills, with intricate melodies and harmonies that challenge and delight the ear. The album also features a unique take on "Goodbye Gladstone," a lesser-known standard, showcasing the band's ability to breathe new life into familiar tunes.

"Conversation Piece" is a testament to Mike Murley's talent and his place among the most exciting young jazz musicians of his time. The album's blend of original compositions and well-chosen standards, along with the exceptional playing of the entire band, makes it a standout release in the world of modern jazz. Whether you're a longtime fan of Mike Murley or a newcomer to his music, "Conversation Piece" is sure to impress and entertain.
