Chopin: Piano Sonatas No. 2 and 3 / Polonaises - Alfred Cortot

      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the timeless elegance of Frédéric Chopin's compositions with Alfred Cortot's masterful interpretation on "Chopin: Piano Sonatas No. 2 and 3 / Polonaises." This album, released by Naxos in 2006, is a testament to Cortot's virtuosity and deep understanding of Chopin's music, recorded between 1923 and 1947. The collection features two of Chopin's most celebrated piano sonatas, the Piano Sonata No. 2 in B-Flat Minor, Op. 35, known for its haunting "Funeral March," and the Piano Sonata No. 3 in B Minor, Op. 58, showcasing Cortot's dynamic range and expressive depth.

In addition to the sonatas, the album includes a selection of Chopin's Polonaises, highlighting the grandeur and nationalistic spirit of these pieces. The "Polonaise No. 6 in A-Flat Major, Op. 53, 'Heroic'" and the "Polonaise-fantaisie in A-Flat Major, Op. 61" are particularly noteworthy, demonstrating Cortot's ability to convey both the majestic and intimate aspects of Chopin's music. The album also features three charming Polish Songs, transcribed for piano, adding a touch of lyricism and folk-inspired melodies to the collection.

With a total duration of 1 hour and 9 minutes, this album offers a comprehensive journey through Chopin's piano repertoire, as interpreted by one of the most revered pianists of the 20th century. Alfred Cortot's recordings are not just historical documents but also living, breathing performances that continue to inspire and captivate audiences. Whether you are a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to Chopin's works, this album is a treasure trove of musical brilliance that deserves a place in your collection.

      About Alfred Cortot

Alfred Cortot, born in Switzerland to French and Swiss parents, was a titan of the classical music world in the 20th century, renowned for his prowess as a pianist, conductor, and teacher. With a massive repertoire, Cortot was particularly celebrated for his poetic interpretations of Romantic piano works, with a special affinity for the compositions of Chopin, Franck, Saint-Saëns, and Schumann. His edits of piano music by Chopin, Liszt, and Schumann for Éditions Durand remain influential to this day. Cortot's career spanned decades, primarily based in Paris, and he was one of the most prolifically-recorded pianists of his time, often re-recording major works multiple times. His legacy as a teacher was equally significant, with students who came to him already technically proficient, seeking his unique insights and artistic guidance. Despite his controversial role in France's Nazi-sanctioned occupation government during World War II, Cortot's musical contributions continue to inspire and captivate classical music enthusiasts worldwide.
