Chopin: Cello Sonata – Schubert: Arpeggione Sonata - Steven Isserlis
Chopin: Cello Sonata – Schubert: Arpeggione Sonata - Steven Isserlis

      Album Details

In this captivating release, the renowned cellist Steven Isserlis joins forces with pianist Dénes Várjon to present a compelling exploration of works by Chopin and Schubert. Isserlis, known for his passionate advocacy of the cello repertoire, brings his distinctive artistry to Chopin's Cello Sonata in G Minor, Op. 65, a piece that, as Isserlis argues in the album's booklet note, is often overlooked but deserves a place in the mainstream. The sonata is framed by Chopin's early Introduction and Polonaise brillante in C Major, Op. 3, adding a historical context to the program.

The second half of the album is dedicated to Schubert's Arpeggione Sonata in A Minor, D. 821, a work originally composed for an instrument that is now obsolete. Isserlis and Várjon's sensitive interpretation brings out the poignant beauty of this piece, showcasing the versatility of the cello. The album also includes a selection of shorter pieces, such as Chopin's Nocturne in C Minor, Op. 15 No. 1, and Schubert's Nacht und Träume, D. 827, arranged for cello and piano by Isserlis himself.

Recorded in 2018 and released under the Hyperion label, this album offers a total of 1 hour and 17 minutes of exquisite chamber music. Isserlis and Várjon's partnership results in a performance that is both technically impressive and deeply expressive, making this album a standout in the classical music landscape.
