      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the captivating world of Ernest Chausson's chamber music with this exquisite album, released on October 3, 2001, under the Stradivarius label. Spanning a total of 74 minutes, this collection showcases two of Chausson's most notable works: the Concerto for Violin, Piano & String Quartet in D Major, Op. 21, and the String Quartet in C Minor, Op. 35.

The album opens with the four-movement Concerto for Violin, Piano & String Quartet, a piece that exemplifies Chausson's mastery of blending romantic expressiveness with classical structure. The first movement, "Décidé," sets a lively and determined tone, while the second movement, "Sicilienne," offers a moment of lyrical beauty and introspection. The third movement, "Grave," delves into deeper emotional territories, and the final movement, "Finale. Très animé," brings the concerto to a thrilling close.

Following the concerto, the album presents the String Quartet in C Minor, Op. 35. This three-movement work is a testament to Chausson's ability to create rich, harmonically complex music that is both intellectually stimulating and emotionally resonant. The first movement, "Grave," begins with a sense of solemnity, while the second movement, "Très calme," provides a serene contrast. The final movement, "Gaiement et pas trop vite," concludes the quartet with a spirited and joyful flourish.

Chausson's compositions are known for their lyrical melodies, intricate harmonies, and innovative use of form. This album is a perfect introduction to his chamber music, offering a rich and rewarding listening experience that highlights the beauty and depth of his work. Whether you are a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album is sure to captivate and inspire.

      About Ernest Chausson

Ernest Chausson, a prominent figure in French Romantic music, left an indelible mark on the late 19th-century musical landscape despite his tragically short life. Born into an affluent Parisian family, Chausson initially pursued law but soon turned his passion to music, studying under the esteemed Jules Massenet and César Franck at the Paris Conservatory. His compositions, though relatively few in number, are celebrated for their originality and beguiling charm. Chausson's works span various genres, including chamber music, orchestral pieces, operas, and songs, each imbued with a unique blend of Wagnerian lyricism and French harmonic finesse. Among his most notable works is the "Poème" for violin and orchestra, a piece that began as a symphonic poem but evolved into a concertante character piece. Chausson's untimely death in a bicycle accident at the age of 44 cut short a promising career, but his legacy endures, influencing future generations of composers and captivating audiences with his evocative and deeply personal music.
