      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the captivating world of Ernest Chausson's chamber music with this exquisite album, released on Aulicus Classics in November 2019. The album showcases two of Chausson's most celebrated works: the Concert for Violin, Piano, and String Quartet in D Major, Op. 21, and the String Quartet in C Minor, Op. 35. Spanning a total of seven tracks and clocking in at just over an hour and thirteen minutes, this collection is a testament to Chausson's mastery of the chamber music genre.

The Concert for Violin, Piano, and String Quartet in D Major, Op. 21, is a four-movement work that begins with a serene and introspective "Decide - Calme - Anime," followed by the lyrical and flowing "Sicilienne: Pas vite." The third movement, "Grave," is a poignant and reflective interlude, leading into the lively and animated finale, "Tres anime." The String Quartet in C Minor, Op. 35, complements the concert with its own three-movement structure, starting with the somber and moderate "Grave - Modere," transitioning into the tranquil "Tres calme," and concluding with the spirited "Gaiement et pas trop vite."

Chausson's compositions are known for their rich harmonies, expressive melodies, and intricate textures, and this album is no exception. The performances are brought to life by a talented ensemble of musicians, with Gabriele Pieranunzi featured on piano. Whether you're a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album offers a compelling introduction to the works of Ernest Chausson and the beauty of chamber music.

      About Ernest Chausson

Ernest Chausson, a prominent figure in French Romantic music, left an indelible mark on the late 19th-century musical landscape despite his tragically short life. Born into an affluent Parisian family, Chausson initially pursued law but soon turned his passion to music, studying under the esteemed Jules Massenet and César Franck at the Paris Conservatory. His compositions, though relatively few in number, are celebrated for their originality and beguiling charm. Chausson's works span various genres, including chamber music, orchestral pieces, operas, and songs, each imbued with a unique blend of Wagnerian lyricism and French harmonic finesse. Among his most notable works is the "Poème" for violin and orchestra, a piece that began as a symphonic poem but evolved into a concertante character piece. Chausson's untimely death in a bicycle accident at the age of 44 cut short a promising career, but his legacy endures, influencing future generations of composers and captivating audiences with his evocative and deeply personal music.
