      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the enchanting world of Emmanuel Chabrier's "Briséïs ou Les amants de Corinthe," a captivating opera that showcases the composer's unique blend of wit, charm, and dramatic flair. Recorded live during the 1994 Edinburgh Festival at the Usher Hall, this 1995 release is a historical gem, marking the first-ever performance of the opera in Britain.

Spanning 38 tracks and over an hour of music, this album is a testament to Chabrier's mastery of melody and orchestration. The opera tells the tragic love story of Briséïs and Hylas, set against the backdrop of ancient Corinth. From the gentle sway of the sailors' song in "La nef légère a pris l'essor" to the heart-wrenching pleas of "Mon Dieu, pardonnez-leur," each track is a vivid scene in a richly drawn drama.

Chabrier's score is a delightful mix of lyrical beauty and dramatic intensity, with influences ranging from Greek mythology to early Christianity. The album features a stellar cast of vocalists, including Mark Padmore and Kathryn Harries, who bring depth and nuance to their respective roles. The recording, engineered by Tony Kime, captures the immediacy and energy of the live performance, making for an engaging and immersive listening experience.

Whether you're a seasoned opera enthusiast or a curious newcomer, "Briséïs ou Les amants de Corinthe" offers a compelling introduction to Chabrier's operatic world. The album's historical significance, combined with its musical richness, makes it a standout addition to any classical music collection.

      About Emmanuel Chabrier

Emmanuel Chabrier, born Alexis-Emmanuel Chabrier, was a French Romantic composer and pianist whose musical journey was as vibrant and captivating as the Parisian scene of the 1880s. Despite his bourgeois family's disapproval of a musical career, Chabrier's passion for music burned brightly from a young age, with his first compositions emerging when he was just eight years old. He initially pursued a career in law and worked as a civil servant, but his true calling was music. From 1880 onwards, he dedicated himself fully to composing, leaving behind a rich legacy of works that span opera, operetta, piano, orchestral music, and songs. Chabrier's music is renowned for its verve and wit, reflecting the lively spirit of the Parisian artistic scene. His orchestral works, such as "España," are particularly celebrated, showcasing his unique talent and enduring influence. Born in Ambert, in the Auvergne region of central France, Chabrier's musical genius was nurtured from a young age, ultimately leading him to become one of France's most beloved composers.
