      Album Details

Dive into the vibrant world of jazz with Thad Jones' "Central Park North," a timeless collection of big band brilliance that has captivated audiences since its original release in 1969. This 2004 reissue, meticulously remastered, brings the legendary Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra back to life, offering six tracks that showcase the ensemble's unparalleled skill and innovation.

The album kicks off with the energetic "Tow Away Zone," recorded live at A&R Studios in 1969, setting the stage for a journey through the rich tapestry of hard bop and bebop. "Quietude" offers a moment of reflection, while "Jive Samba" and "The Groove Merchant" demonstrate the orchestra's dynamic range and infectious rhythm. "Big Dipper" and the titular "Central Park North" round out the collection, each track a testament to Thad Jones' compositional genius and the orchestra's virtuosity.

Led by the formidable duo of Thad Jones on flügelhorn and Mel Lewis on drums, the album features an impressive lineup of jazz greats, including tenor saxophonist Joe Farrell and trombonist Bill Watrous. The 1994 remastering ensures that every note, every crescendo, and every subtle nuance is preserved, providing an authentic listening experience that transports you back to the golden age of jazz.

"Central Park North" is not just a collection of songs; it's a celebration of jazz in its purest form. Whether you're a seasoned jazz enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album offers a rich and rewarding listening experience. The intricate arrangements, the flawless performances, and the timeless compositions make "Central Park North" a standout in Thad Jones' discography and a quintessential example of big band jazz at its finest.

      About Thad Jones

Thad Jones, born in Pontiac, Michigan, was a titan of jazz, renowned for his virtuosity on the trumpet and his innovative compositions and arrangements. Hailing from a musical family that included brothers Hank Jones (piano) and Elvin Jones (drums), Thad Jones began his professional career at the tender age of 16 and served in U.S. Army bands during World War II. Throughout his illustrious career, Jones played with jazz legends such as Count Basie, Thelonious Monk, and Gil Evans, and led his own big band, the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra, which redefined the sound of modern jazz. His compositions, including the iconic "A Child is Born," are staples of the genre, showcasing his unique blend of hard bop and big band styles. Jones' influence extended beyond his music; he was also one of the first prominent jazz musicians to hold a full-time professorship, teaching at William Paterson University. His legacy as a trumpeter, composer, and bandleader continues to inspire musicians and captivate audiences worldwide.
