      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the rich, resonant world of the viola with William Primrose's "Casadesus, Mozart & Others: Viola Works." This 1993 release on Biddulph Recordings is a testament to Primrose's virtuosity and his pivotal role in elevating the viola to a solo instrument. The album spans a mere 57 minutes, yet it's packed with a diverse range of chamber and classical pieces that showcase the viola's versatility and depth.

Primrose is joined by Walter Goehr in a captivating performance of the Viola Concerto in B Minor, styled in the manner of Handel, which opens the album. The concerto is followed by a delicate Trio Sonata in E Major, Op. 2 No. 9, HWV 394, arranged for violin, viola, and piano. The heart of the album lies in the Sinfonia Concertante in E-Flat Major, K. 364, a three-movement piece that Mozart composed for viola and violin. The album concludes with the whimsically titled Duet mit zwei obligaten Augengläsern, WoO 32, adding a touch of humor to the collection.

Primrose, a Scottish-born violist, was instrumental in expanding the viola's repertoire and establishing it as a solo instrument. His collaborations with prominent composers and musicians have left an indelible mark on the classical music world. This album is a celebration of his artistry and a treat for any classical music enthusiast.
