Caldara: Morte e sepoltura di Cristo - Antonio Caldara

      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the profound and moving world of Antonio Caldara's "Morte e sepoltura di Cristo," a masterful oratorio that blends the rich traditions of Italian Baroque music with the depth of German passion narratives. Composed in 1724, this work is a testament to Caldara's genius and his unique contributions to the sacred oratorio genre.

This double album, released on Glossa in 2015, features a stellar cast of vocalists, including Maria Grazia Schiavo, Silvia Frigato, Martina Belli, Anicio Zorzi Giustiniani, and Ugo Guagliardo, accompanied by the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Fabio Biondi. The performance captures the intricate beauty and dramatic intensity of Caldara's score, making it a standout in the repertoire of Baroque music.

"Morte e sepoltura di Cristo" is not just a collection of songs but a comprehensive musical journey through the final hours of Christ's life, from his crucifixion to his burial. The work is divided into two parts, each filled with arias, recitatives, and choruses that evoke the solemnity and pathos of the events they depict. The inclusion of instrumental pieces, such as the Sinfonia No. 8 "Sedecia" and the Sonata in G Minor, K. 347, adds depth and variety to the musical narrative.

Caldara's compositional style, characterized by its lyrical melodies and expressive harmonies, is beautifully showcased in this recording. The vocal performances are particularly noteworthy, with each singer bringing a unique interpretive depth to their roles. The orchestral accompaniment is equally impressive, providing a rich and nuanced backdrop to the vocal lines.

This album is a must for anyone interested in Baroque music, offering a rare opportunity to experience one of Antonio Caldara's most significant works in its entirety. Whether you are a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, "Morte e sepoltura di Cristo" promises a deeply rewarding listening experience.
