      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the captivating artistry of Sir Peter Pears with this exquisite collection of works by Benjamin Britten. Released on July 4, 2010, under the Discover Classical Music label, this album showcases two of Britten's most celebrated compositions: the Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings, Op. 31, and Les Illuminations, Op. 18. Spanning a total of 45 minutes, this album is a testament to the enduring partnership between Britten and Pears, both as collaborators and life partners.

The Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings, Op. 31, is a poetic exploration of the night, with texts drawn from various poets. The piece is renowned for its evocative melodies and the stunning interplay between the tenor, horn, and strings. Pears' delicate and expressive tenor voice is perfectly complemented by the virtuosic horn playing, creating a hauntingly beautiful atmosphere.

Les Illuminations, Op. 18, is a cycle of songs based on the poetry of Arthur Rimbaud. This work is a brilliant showcase for the tenor voice, with Pears delivering a performance that is both technically impressive and deeply moving. The orchestration is light and delicate, allowing the voice to shine through.

This album is a must-listen for fans of classical music, opera, and choral works. The performances by Sir Peter Pears, along with the contributions from Dennis Brain on the horn and Eugene Goossens conducting, are nothing short of extraordinary. Whether you're a longtime admirer of Britten's music or a newcomer looking to explore his works, this album offers a rich and rewarding listening experience.

      About Sir Peter Pears

Sir Peter Pears, born in Farnham in 1910, was an English tenor renowned for his profound interpretations and his lifelong partnership with composer Benjamin Britten. Their collaboration spanned nearly four decades, with Britten composing numerous roles and songs specifically for Pears, including the titular character in "Peter Grimes" and the co-libretto for "A Midsummer Night's Dream." Pears' career was marked by his exceptional skill and subtlety, making him one of England's leading tenors in the 20th century. He premiered nearly all of Britten's operas and was celebrated for his performances of Bach's cantatas and passions, particularly as the Evangelist. Pears' contributions extended beyond performing; he also edited ancient English vocal music and co-founded the Aldeburgh Festival. Knighted in 1978, Pears passed away in Aldeburgh in 1986, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire and influence the world of classical music.
