      Album Details

Dive into the captivating world of Bright Sheng's "A Night at the Chinese Opera," a 2015 release that seamlessly blends Eastern and Western musical traditions. This album, featuring the Shanghai Quartet, Peter Serkin, and Weigang Li, offers a unique auditory experience that showcases Sheng's distinctive style, described by the MacArthur Foundation as a "fresh voice in cross-cultural music."

The album opens with "Dance Capriccio," a piece inspired by the rhythmic energy and haunting melodies of Himalayan Sherpa dances. It sets the tone for the eclectic journey that follows, where traditional Chinese opera rhythms and characteristic singing voices are masterfully integrated into a contemporary classical framework.

"String Quartet No. 5, 'The Miraculous'" is another highlight, demonstrating Sheng's ability to weave intricate compositions that resonate with depth and complexity. The album also includes the multi-movement works "My Song" and "My Other Song," each offering a diverse range of tempos and moods, from nostalgic and slow to prestissimo and funeral march-like.

Released on the prestigious Naxos label, "A Night at the Chinese Opera" spans 11 tracks and clocks in at just under 70 minutes. Whether you're a fan of classical music or simply curious about the fusion of cultural influences, this album promises an enriching listening experience. Bright Sheng's innovative approach to composition makes this album a standout in the world of contemporary classical music.
