Composed by the German master, these quartets offer a profound exploration of the chamber music genre, showcasing Braunfels' unique voice and deep musical insight.

The album opens with the String Quartet No. 1 in A Minor, Op. 60, a four-movement work that unfolds with a sense of drama and introspection. The first movement, "Allegro moderato," sets the stage with its haunting melodies and rich harmonies, while the second movement, "Langsam," offers a poignant and reflective interlude. The third movement, "Bewegt," is a lively and energetic dance, and the final movement, "Allegro," brings the quartet to a powerful and triumphant close.

The String Quartet No. 2 in F Major, Op. 61, follows, presenting a stark contrast to the first quartet. This work is marked by its lyrical beauty and pastoral charm, with each movement offering a unique and captivating listening experience. The first movement, "Allegro," is a spirited and joyful dance, while the second movement, "Scherzo: Allegro agitato," is a whirlwind of energy and excitement. The third movement, "Adagio," is a serene and contemplative interlude, and the final movement, "Vivace," brings the quartet to a thrilling and exhilarating conclusion.

Performed by the renowned Auryn Quartet, this recording captures the essence of Braunfels' music with stunning clarity and precision. The quartet's impeccable technique and deep understanding of the score bring these works to life, allowing the listener to fully appreciate the beauty and complexity of Braunfels' compositional style.

Recorded in 1996 and released by CPO, this album is a testament to the enduring power of Braunfels' music.
