      About Inge Borkh

      Inge Borkh, a towering figure in the world of opera, was a German dramatic soprano renowned for her powerful performances and captivating stage presence. Born in Germany, Borkh's career flourished in the post-war era, earning her international acclaim. Her breakthrough came with the German premiere of Menotti's 'The Consul' in Basel in 1951. She went on to grace the stages of prestigious opera houses across Europe and the Americas, including the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. Borkh was particularly celebrated for her portrayals of Richard Strauss's heroines, Salome and Elektra, showcasing her vocal prowess and dramatic intensity. Her repertoire also included contemporary works, such as the premiere of Josef Tal's 'Ashmedai'. Borkh's legacy is marked by her exceptional recordings and her receipt of the Hans-Reinhart-Ring, Switzerland's highest theatre honour.
