      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the rich, romantic sounds of Alexander Borodin with this captivating album, released on March 3, 2017, by Hyperion. This collection showcases Borodin's masterful compositions, including his Piano Quintet in C Minor and String Quartet No. 2 in D Major, performed by the esteemed Goldner String Quartet and pianist Piers Lane. The album also features a unique gem: the Cello Sonata in B Minor, a partially lost work that has been meticulously reconstructed by composer Mikhail Goldstein, adding a layer of historical intrigue to the listening experience.

Spanning a total of 1 hour and 17 minutes, this album is a testament to Borodin's enduring legacy in the classical music world. The Piano Quintet in C Minor opens with a somber Andante, gradually building to a lively Scherzo and culminating in a spirited Finale. The String Quartet No. 2 in D Major offers a delightful contrast, beginning with an Allegro moderato and culminating in a lively Vivace. The Cello Sonata in B Minor, with its Pastorale and Maestoso movements, adds a touch of elegance and nostalgia.

Whether you're a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer looking to explore the genre, this album offers a compelling journey through the works of one of Russia's most celebrated composers. The performances by the Goldner String Quartet and Piers Lane are nothing short of exquisite, bringing Borodin's compositions to life with precision and passion. Don't miss the opportunity to add this outstanding album to your collection.

      About Alexander Borodin

Alexander Borodin, born in St Petersburg in 1833, was a remarkable figure in the world of classical music, renowned not only for his compositions but also for his significant contributions to chemistry. As a member of the influential group known as 'The Five', Borodin dedicated himself to creating a uniquely Russian musical identity. His most celebrated works include the opera 'Prince Igor', the symphonic poem 'In the Steppes of Central Asia', and his two string quartets. Despite his demanding career in science, Borodin's musical output is marked by its originality and beauty, reflecting his deep passion for both art and science. His life was tragically cut short when he collapsed and died on the dance floor at a ball in 1887, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire. Borodin's ability to balance his dual careers as a scientist and composer is a testament to his extraordinary talent and dedication.
