      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the rich, romantic world of Alexander Borodin's chamber music with the "Complete Works for String Quartet." Released in 1997 by the Stradivarius label, this album is a testament to Borodin's unique ability to blend his scientific precision with his profound musical passion. Despite his full-time career as a chemist, Borodin created works that are as compelling and intricate as any of his contemporaries.

The album features two complete string quartets, each offering a distinct journey through Borodin's musical landscape. The String Quartet No. 1 in A Major, composed in 1879, opens with a lively Moderato-Allegro, followed by a contemplative Andante con moto, a spirited Scherzo, and a robust Andante-Allegro risoluto. The String Quartet No. 2 in D Major continues the exploration with an Allegro moderato, a playful Scherzo, a serene Notturno, and a concluding Andante. Additionally, the album includes the charming Serenata alla spagnola and a Scherzo in D Major, showcasing Borodin's versatility and wit.

Performed by the renowned Borciani Quartet, this recording captures the essence of Borodin's compositions with clarity and depth. The album's duration of approximately 75 minutes provides a comprehensive overview of Borodin's contributions to the string quartet repertoire. Whether you're a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album offers a captivating exploration of Borodin's musical genius.

      About Alexander Borodin

Alexander Borodin, born in St Petersburg in 1833, was a remarkable figure in the world of classical music, renowned not only for his compositions but also for his significant contributions to chemistry. As a member of the influential group known as 'The Five', Borodin dedicated himself to creating a uniquely Russian musical identity. His most celebrated works include the opera 'Prince Igor', the symphonic poem 'In the Steppes of Central Asia', and his two string quartets. Despite his demanding career in science, Borodin's musical output is marked by its originality and beauty, reflecting his deep passion for both art and science. His life was tragically cut short when he collapsed and died on the dance floor at a ball in 1887, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire. Borodin's ability to balance his dual careers as a scientist and composer is a testament to his extraordinary talent and dedication.
