      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the enchanting world of Alexander Borodin's String Quartets Nos. 1 and 2, a masterful collection of chamber music that showcases the composer's unique blend of Russian folk influences and classical sophistication. Released in 2001 by Sono Luminus, this album features the St. Petersburg String Quartet's exquisite performances of Borodin's two most celebrated string quartets.

Born in 1833, Alexander Borodin was a man of many talents, excelling both as a chemist and a composer. His musical genius shines through in these quartets, which are staples of the classical repertoire. The String Quartet No. 1 in A Major and the String Quartet No. 2 in D Major offer a rich tapestry of melodies and harmonies that captivate the listener from start to finish.

The album begins with the String Quartet No. 1, a work that, while less famous than its successor, is no less captivating. It opens with a lively "Moderato - Allegro" movement, followed by a serene "Andante con moto - Fugato: Un poco più moso," a spirited "Scherzo. Prestissimo," and a concluding "Andante - Allegro risoluto" that brings the quartet to a thrilling close.

The String Quartet No. 2 in D Major is perhaps Borodin's most beloved work in this genre. It starts with an "Allegro moderato" that sets a contemplative tone, followed by a playful "Scherzo. Allegro." The "Notturno: Andante" is a highlight, offering a hauntingly beautiful melody that showcases Borodin's lyrical genius. The album concludes with the "Finale. Andante - Vivace," a movement that builds to a triumphant finish.

With a total duration of one hour and five minutes, this album is a comprehensive exploration of Borodin's string quartet compositions. Whether you are a seasoned classical enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this recording promises a rewarding listening experience. The St. Petersburg String Quartet's impeccable technique and expressive playing bring Borodin's music to life, making this album a treasure for any classical music lover.

      About Alexander Borodin

Alexander Borodin, born in St Petersburg in 1833, was a remarkable figure in the world of classical music, renowned not only for his compositions but also for his significant contributions to chemistry. As a member of the influential group known as 'The Five', Borodin dedicated himself to creating a uniquely Russian musical identity. His most celebrated works include the opera 'Prince Igor', the symphonic poem 'In the Steppes of Central Asia', and his two string quartets. Despite his demanding career in science, Borodin's musical output is marked by its originality and beauty, reflecting his deep passion for both art and science. His life was tragically cut short when he collapsed and died on the dance floor at a ball in 1887, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire. Borodin's ability to balance his dual careers as a scientist and composer is a testament to his extraordinary talent and dedication.
