      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the world of classical cello concertos with János Starker, a renowned cellist celebrated for his technical prowess and expressive depth. This album, released on November 1, 2015, under the Praga Digitals label, features a captivating collection of works by Bohuslav Martinů, Sergei Prokofiev, and Ernő Dohnányi. Spanning a total of 77 minutes, the album showcases Starker's mastery of chamber music and classical genres.

The album opens with Martinů's Cello Concerto No. 1, H. 196, a three-movement piece that highlights the composer's distinctive style and Starker's ability to convey a range of emotions through his playing. The first movement, Allegro moderato, sets a lively pace, while the second movement, Andante poco moderato, offers a more introspective and reflective tone. The final movement, Allegro, brings the concerto to a dynamic and energetic close.

Next, Prokofiev's Cello Concerto in E Minor, Op. 58, takes center stage. This concerto is known for its technical demands and rich harmonic language. Starker navigates the first movement, Andante - Poco meno mosso (andante assai) - Adagio, with sensitivity and precision, followed by the Allegro giusto, which showcases his virtuosic skills. The Finale, Allegro moderato - Adagio - Allegro vivo, concludes the concerto with a thrilling and exhilarating finish.

The album concludes with Dohnányi's Konzertstück for Cello and Orchestra in D Major, Op. 12. This single-movement work, Allegro non troppo - Adagio - Allegro non troppo, demonstrates Starker's versatility and his ability to bring out the lyrical and dramatic qualities of the music.

János Starker's interpretation of these concertos is a testament to his artistry and his deep understanding of the repertoire. Whether you are a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album offers a rich and rewarding listening experience.
