      Album Details

Immerse yourself in a timeless collection of classical masterpieces with Leonard Rose's "Bloch: Schelomo & Saint-Saëns: Cello Concerto No. 1 in A Minor & Tchaikovsky: Variations on a Rococo Theme, Op. 33." This 2018 remastered release on Sony Classical brings together three iconic works, showcasing Rose's virtuosic cello performances alongside the New York Philharmonic and conducted by Dimitri Mitropoulos.

The album opens with Ernest Bloch's "Schelomo - Hebraic Rhapsody for Cello & Orchestra," a profound and evocative piece that draws from Jewish liturgical and folk music traditions. Following this is Camille Saint-Saëns' "Cello Concerto No. 1 in A Minor, Op. 33," a romantic-era concerto that highlights Rose's technical brilliance and expressive depth. The album concludes with Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's "Variations on a Rococo Theme, Op. 33," a neo-classical gem that blends Baroque elegance with Romantic sensibilities.

With a total runtime of 58 minutes, this album is a concise yet comprehensive journey through some of the most beloved and enduring works in the cello repertoire. Whether you're a seasoned classical enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, Leonard Rose's masterful interpretations and the rich, remastered sound quality make this album a captivating addition to any music collection.

      About Leonard Rose

Leonard Rose, the celebrated American cellist and pedagogue, left an indelible mark on the world of classical and chamber music. Born into a Russian immigrant family in Washington, D.C., in 1918, Rose's musical journey was nurtured by his amateur cellist father. His velvety tone and complete mastery of the bow arm made him a consummate performer, while his kindness and generosity endeared him to colleagues and students alike. Rose's collaborations, notably with pianist Eugene Istomin, produced acclaimed recordings, including the complete trios of Ludwig van Beethoven. Before his untimely death in 1984, Rose served as a section cellist of the NBC Symphony, cementing his legacy as one of the finest American musicians and teachers of the 20th century.
