      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the captivating world of Franz Berwald's orchestral masterpieces with this exceptional album, featuring two of his most renowned symphonies. Recorded in 1962 by the esteemed Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt, this collection showcases Berwald's unique compositional voice and the orchestra's virtuosity.

The album opens with Berwald's Symphony No. 1 in G Minor, nicknamed "Sérieuse" for its serious and introspective character. This four-movement work is a journey through a range of emotions, from the energetic and dramatic first movement to the lyrical and contemplative adagio. The third movement, marked "Stretto," is a lively and intricate dance, while the finale brings the symphony to a triumphant close.

Following this is Berwald's Symphony No. 3 in C Major, "Singulière," a work that stands out for its distinctive and innovative structure. The first movement, "Allegro fuocoso," is a fiery and passionate opening, while the second movement combines a slow adagio with a playful scherzo. The symphony concludes with a thrilling and exhilarating finale.

This album is a testament to Berwald's genius and the exceptional artistry of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. Whether you're a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this recording offers a rich and rewarding listening experience.

      About Franz Berwald

Franz Adolf Berwald, born in Stockholm on July 23, 1796, was a pioneering Swedish Romantic composer and violinist, often hailed as the most significant Swedish composer of the 19th century. Despite his initial struggles for recognition, Berwald's compositions, which include operas, chamber music, and four symphonies, have since been celebrated for their innovative spirit and emotional depth. His work is considered a precursor to the Scandinavian symphonic school, blending lyrical melodies with structural sophistication. Berwald's Violin Concerto, for instance, showcases his Schubertian influences with its evocative andante opening. Beyond music, Berwald led an unconventional life, working as an orthopedist and later managing a sawmill and glass factory. His legacy endures as a testament to his enduring creativity and resilience, with his compositions continuing to captivate audiences and inspire musicians worldwide.
