Berwald: Symphonies Nos. 1-4, Overtures - Franz Berwald

      Album Details

Franz Berwald, a pioneering Swedish composer of the Romantic era, presents a captivating collection of his symphonic works in "Berwald: Symphonies Nos. 1-4, Overtures." Released in 1996 under the Hyperion label, this album spans a substantial 2 hours and 25 minutes, offering a comprehensive exploration of Berwald's orchestral genius.

The album features four complete symphonies, each with its unique character and charm. The "Sinfonie sérieuse" in G Minor, No. 1, showcases Berwald's ability to blend depth and intensity, while the "Sinfonie capricieuse" in D Major, No. 2, displays his playful and inventive side. The "Sinfonie singulière" in C Major, No. 3, stands out with its distinctive and innovative structure, and the "Sinfonie naïve" in E-Flat Major, No. 4, concludes the symphonic journey with a blend of simplicity and sophistication.

In addition to the symphonies, the album includes two overtures, "Estrella de Soria" and "Drottningen av Golconda," which demonstrate Berwald's mastery of orchestral color and dramatic tension. The inclusion of the Symphony in A Major, completed by Druce, adds another layer of intrigue to this already rich collection.

Performed by the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and conducted by Roy Goodman, this album is a testament to Berwald's enduring legacy and the timeless appeal of his music. Whether you're a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album offers a rewarding and enriching listening experience.

      About Franz Berwald

Franz Adolf Berwald, born in Stockholm on July 23, 1796, was a pioneering Swedish Romantic composer and violinist, often hailed as the most significant Swedish composer of the 19th century. Despite his initial struggles for recognition, Berwald's compositions, which include operas, chamber music, and four symphonies, have since been celebrated for their innovative spirit and emotional depth. His work is considered a precursor to the Scandinavian symphonic school, blending lyrical melodies with structural sophistication. Berwald's Violin Concerto, for instance, showcases his Schubertian influences with its evocative andante opening. Beyond music, Berwald led an unconventional life, working as an orthopedist and later managing a sawmill and glass factory. His legacy endures as a testament to his enduring creativity and resilience, with his compositions continuing to captivate audiences and inspire musicians worldwide.
