Berwald: String Quartets Nos. 2 and 3 - Franz Berwald

      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the intricate and underrated world of Franz Berwald, a Swedish composer who left an indelible mark on classical music during the mid-1800s. This album, "Berwald: String Quartets Nos. 2 and 3," released in 1986 under the Caprice label, offers a captivating journey through two of Berwald's most notable string quartets. The Frydén String Quartet brings these compositions to life with a total duration of 39 minutes, divided into nine tracks that showcase Berwald's unique musical vision.

String Quartet No. 2 in A Minor and String Quartet No. 3 in E-Flat Major are presented in their entirety, allowing you to appreciate the full scope of Berwald's work. The album begins with the hauntingly beautiful "Introduzione. Adagio - Allegro" of the second quartet and concludes with the lively "Allegro di molto" of the third quartet. Each movement is a testament to Berwald's ability to blend emotional depth with technical brilliance.

Berwald's compositions are often overlooked, but this album provides a compelling introduction to his genius. The String Quartet No. 2, despite being composed later in his career, does not show a significant advancement over his earlier works, offering a consistent and cohesive listening experience. The String Quartet No. 3, on the other hand, showcases Berwald's ability to innovate and experiment within the traditional string quartet format.

This album is not just for classical music enthusiasts; it is a treasure trove for anyone who appreciates the beauty and complexity of well-crafted music. Whether you are familiar with Berwald's work or discovering it for the first time, this album is sure to leave a lasting impression.

      About Franz Berwald

Franz Adolf Berwald, born in Stockholm on July 23, 1796, was a pioneering Swedish Romantic composer and violinist, often hailed as the most significant Swedish composer of the 19th century. Despite his initial struggles for recognition, Berwald's compositions, which include operas, chamber music, and four symphonies, have since been celebrated for their innovative spirit and emotional depth. His work is considered a precursor to the Scandinavian symphonic school, blending lyrical melodies with structural sophistication. Berwald's Violin Concerto, for instance, showcases his Schubertian influences with its evocative andante opening. Beyond music, Berwald led an unconventional life, working as an orthopedist and later managing a sawmill and glass factory. His legacy endures as a testament to his enduring creativity and resilience, with his compositions continuing to captivate audiences and inspire musicians worldwide.
