      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the rich, evocative sounds of Hector Berlioz's "Harold en Italie" and the captivating "Viola Sonata" by Charles Roger, performed by the renowned violist Philip Dukes and pianist Piers Lane. Released in 2013 on the Naxos label, this album is a testament to the artistry and technical prowess of both performers.

"Harold en Italie," composed in 1834, is a symphony with a prominent viola part, originally commissioned by the legendary violinist Niccolò Paganini. The work is a vivid musical journey inspired by Lord Byron's poem "Childe Harold's Pilgrimage," and it showcases the expressive range of the viola. Dukes' performance is both nuanced and powerful, bringing depth and clarity to Berlioz's intricate score.

Complementing this masterpiece is the "Viola Sonata" by Charles Roger, a work that highlights the lyrical and virtuosic capabilities of the viola. Dukes and Lane's collaboration on this piece is a delight, with each movement revealing the depth of their musical understanding and the beauty of their ensemble playing.

The album also includes a bonus track, "Romance oubliée" by Berlioz, adding an extra layer of charm and elegance to the collection. With a total duration of 1 hour and 11 minutes, this album is a perfect addition to any classical music enthusiast's library. Whether you're a seasoned listener or new to the genre, Philip Dukes and Piers Lane's performances are sure to captivate and inspire.
