      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the captivating world of Lennox Berkeley's orchestral mastery with "Berkeley: Symphonies Nos. 1 & 2." This album, released on March 1, 2007, under the Lyrita label, offers a profound exploration of chamber music through two of Berkeley's most celebrated symphonies. Composed in 1940 and 1958 respectively, these symphonies showcase Berkeley's ability to blend classical forms with a unique emotional and stylistic balance.

The first symphony, Op. 16, opens with an "Allegro moderato" that sets the stage for a journey through contrasting movements, each revealing different facets of Berkeley's compositional genius. The second symphony, Op. 51, recorded in its 1976 version, continues this exploration with its own set of dynamic and varied movements. The album spans a total of eight tracks, with a duration of one hour and two minutes, providing a comprehensive experience of Berkeley's symphonic works.

Conducted by Norman Del Mar and performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra, this recording captures the essence of Berkeley's compositions with precision and passion. The album is a testament to Berkeley's enduring influence in the world of classical music, offering both seasoned enthusiasts and new listeners a chance to appreciate his timeless contributions.

      About Lennox Berkeley

Sir Lennox Berkeley, born into an aristocratic family in Oxford in 1903, was a seminal figure in 20th-century English music, renowned for his compositions and teaching. He studied at Oxford University and later with the esteemed Nadia Boulanger in Paris, where he befriended notable composers such as Francis Poulenc, Igor Stravinsky, and Darius Milhaud. Berkeley's music is celebrated for its light textures, piquant harmonies, and a distinctly French refinement, reflecting the influences of his mentors and peers. His works span a wide range of forms, including operas, orchestral pieces, piano compositions, and chamber music, with a particular reputation for his choral works, notably the Stabat Mater. Converting to Roman Catholicism in 1929, Berkeley's faith significantly inspired his compositions. Throughout his career, he was known for his dedication to music and his special bond with his son, Michael Berkeley. Berkeley's legacy continues to be promoted by the Lennox Berkeley Society, ensuring his contributions to English music endure.
