      Album Details

Béla Bartók's "Mikrokosmos Excerpts - Ned Rorem Sonata No. 2" is a captivating classical piano album that showcases the genius of two renowned composers, Béla Bartók and Ned Rorem. Released on January 1, 2000, under the Maestoso label, this album spans a concise yet impactful 30 minutes, offering a rich tapestry of musical exploration.

The album begins with excerpts from Bartók's "Mikrokosmos," a celebrated cycle of 153 pieces designed for educational purposes. The selected pieces from Book VI, including "Free Variations," "Minor Seconds, Major Seventh," and several Bulgarian Rhythm Dances, exemplify Bartók's innovative approach to composition, blending folk influences with modernist techniques. These works are not only pedagogical but also deeply expressive, offering a glimpse into Bartók's unique musical language.

The second half of the album features Ned Rorem's Sonata No. 2 for piano, a work that stands as a testament to Rorem's lyrical and harmonic sophistication. The sonata is divided into four distinct movements: "Overture," "Tarantella," "Nocturne," and "Toccata. Epilogue." Each movement showcases Rorem's ability to craft intricate, emotionally resonant music that ranges from the energetic and rhythmic to the introspective and serene.

This album is a perfect blend of Bartók's didactic yet profound compositions and Rorem's lyrical and harmonic brilliance. It offers a compact yet comprehensive exploration of two distinct yet equally compelling voices in the world of classical piano music. Whether you're a seasoned classical enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album promises a rewarding listening experience.

      About Béla Bartók

Béla Bartók, born in 1881 in Nagyszentmiklós, Hungary, was a towering figure in 20th-century music, renowned as a composer, pianist, and ethnomusicologist. His deep connection to Hungarian and Central European folk music infused his compositions with a unique and captivating flavor, making him one of Hungary's greatest composers alongside Franz Liszt. Bartók's prodigious talent was evident from a young age; by four, he could play forty tunes on the piano, and by five, he began formal piano lessons with his mother. His musical journey took him from his early studies in Pozsony to becoming a distinguished teacher at the Zeneakadémia. Bartók's extensive work in collecting and studying folk music from across Central Europe enriched his compositions, which span orchestral works, string quartets, piano solos, and vocal settings of folk songs. His legacy endures as one of the most significant contributors to classical and neoclassical music, celebrated for his innovative approach and deep cultural roots. Bartók passed away in New York in 1945, leaving behind a rich musical heritage that continues to inspire and enchant audiences worldwide.
