      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the timeless elegance of classical music with Pau Casals' exquisite rendition of Beethoven's Symphonies Nos. 1 and 4, alongside Brahms' Variations on a Theme by Haydn. Released on August 1, 2007, under the prestigious Naxos label, this album is a testament to Casals' mastery and the enduring appeal of these iconic compositions.

The album opens with Beethoven's Symphony No. 1 in C Major, Op. 21, a work that brilliantly showcases the composer's early genius. The four movements, from the stirring "Adagio molto – Allegro con brio" to the lively "Finale. Adagio - Allegro molto e vivace," are performed with a precision and passion that bring Beethoven's vision to life. Following this, Beethoven's Symphony No. 4 in B-Flat Major, Op. 60, continues the journey with its own unique charm, featuring the serene "Adagio" and the spirited "Allegro ma non troppo."

The second half of the album is dedicated to Johannes Brahms' Variations on a Theme by Haydn, Op. 56a, also known as the "St. Anthony Variations." This intricate and captivating piece is performed with a sensitivity and technical brilliance that highlight Casals' exceptional skill. The variations, ranging from the gentle "Andante" to the exhilarating "Presto non troppo," offer a rich tapestry of musical expression.

Complementing these masterpieces is the overture from Brahms' "Die Ruinen von Athen" (The Ruins of Athens), Op. 113, adding a dramatic and evocative prelude to the album. With a total duration of 1 hour and 17 minutes, this album is a comprehensive exploration of some of the most celebrated works in the classical repertoire.

Pau Casals' interpretation brings a fresh perspective to these timeless pieces, making this album a treasure trove for both seasoned classical music enthusiasts and those new to the genre. The combination of Beethoven's revolutionary symphonies and Brahms' intricate variations creates a harmonious blend of innovation and tradition, showcasing the depth and diversity of classical music.

      About Pablo Casals

Pablo Casals, born Pau Casals i Defilló, was a Spanish and Puerto Rican cellist, composer, and conductor renowned for his profound musicality and humanitarian spirit. Born in Catalonia in 1876, Casals is celebrated for his groundbreaking recordings of Bach's Cello Suites, which set a benchmark for future cellists. His artistry extended beyond solo performances, encompassing chamber and orchestral music, and he was also a respected conductor. Casals' commitment to social causes was as notable as his musical prowess; he was known to say, "I am a man first, an artist second," reflecting his deep concern for the welfare of others. Awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1963, Casals' legacy endures through his timeless recordings and his enduring influence on classical music. His cello arrangement, composed after leaving Spain in protest against Franco's dictatorship, became a signature piece in his concerts, embodying his artistic and political convictions. Thomas Mann once wrote of Casals, "For me his existence is a source of joy. He is one of those artists who come to the rescue of humanity's honour."
