      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the timeless elegance of classical music with "Beethoven/Schubert: Piano Trios" by the legendary Alfred Cortot, accompanied by Jacques Thibaud and Pablo Casals. This album, released on July 1, 1999, under Warner Classics, is a masterful collection of two iconic piano trios that have stood the test of time.

The album begins with Beethoven's Piano Trio No. 7 in B-Flat Major, Op. 97, famously known as the "Archduke." This piece is a cornerstone of the classical repertoire, showcasing Beethoven's genius in blending technical brilliance with profound emotional depth. The trio's four movements, from the Allegro moderato to the final Allegro moderato, are performed with exquisite precision and sensitivity by Cortot, Thibaud, and Casals.

Following Beethoven's masterpiece is Schubert's Piano Trio No. 1 in B-Flat Major, Op. 99, D. 898. Schubert's work is a testament to his lyrical and melodic prowess, offering a contrast to Beethoven's more structured approach. The four movements, including the Allegro moderato and the lively Rondo. Allegro vivace, are rendered with the same level of artistry and finesse.

Recorded in 1926 and released on CD in 1999, this album captures the essence of these timeless works, providing a rich and immersive listening experience. The collaboration between Cortot, Thibaud, and Casals is a testament to their individual and collective mastery, making this album a treasure trove for classical music enthusiasts. Whether you're a seasoned listener or new to the genre, this album is sure to captivate and inspire.

      About Alfred Cortot

Alfred Cortot, born in Switzerland to French and Swiss parents, was a titan of the classical music world in the 20th century, renowned for his prowess as a pianist, conductor, and teacher. With a massive repertoire, Cortot was particularly celebrated for his poetic interpretations of Romantic piano works, with a special affinity for the compositions of Chopin, Franck, Saint-Saëns, and Schumann. His edits of piano music by Chopin, Liszt, and Schumann for Éditions Durand remain influential to this day. Cortot's career spanned decades, primarily based in Paris, and he was one of the most prolifically-recorded pianists of his time, often re-recording major works multiple times. His legacy as a teacher was equally significant, with students who came to him already technically proficient, seeking his unique insights and artistic guidance. Despite his controversial role in France's Nazi-sanctioned occupation government during World War II, Cortot's musical contributions continue to inspire and captivate classical music enthusiasts worldwide.
