      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the captivating world of Béla Bartók's masterful compositions with this 1991 release from RCA Red Seal. The album features two of Bartók's most celebrated works: the Violin Concerto No. 2 and the Viola Concerto. Composed in 1937-38, the Violin Concerto No. 2, Sz. 112, was written for Zoltán Székely, a frequent recital partner of Bartók and the first violinist of the Hungarian String Quartet. This concerto is a testament to Bartók's innovative spirit, blending modernist techniques with folk influences, creating a sound that is both familiar and groundbreaking.

The Viola Concerto, though completed posthumously, showcases Bartók's ability to push the boundaries of traditional concerto forms. The piece is known for its rich, expressive melodies and intricate orchestration, offering a profound listening experience.

The album spans a total of 1 hour and 12 minutes, divided into seven tracks. The Violin Concerto No. 2 is presented in three movements: "Allegro non troppo," "Andante tranquillo," and "Allegro molto," each offering a unique exploration of the violin's expressive range. The Viola Concerto is also divided into three movements: "Moderato," "Adagio religioso," and "Allegro vivace," each highlighting the depth and versatility of the viola.

This recording features the exceptional talents of Pinchas Zukerman on violin and viola, with Leonard Slatkin conducting. Their performances bring out the full emotional and technical depth of Bartók's compositions, making this album a quintessential addition to any classical music collection. Whether you are a longtime fan of Bartók or new to his work, this album offers a rich and rewarding exploration of his genius.

      About Béla Bartók

Béla Bartók, born in 1881 in Nagyszentmiklós, Hungary, was a towering figure in 20th-century music, renowned as a composer, pianist, and ethnomusicologist. His deep connection to Hungarian and Central European folk music infused his compositions with a unique and captivating flavor, making him one of Hungary's greatest composers alongside Franz Liszt. Bartók's prodigious talent was evident from a young age; by four, he could play forty tunes on the piano, and by five, he began formal piano lessons with his mother. His musical journey took him from his early studies in Pozsony to becoming a distinguished teacher at the Zeneakadémia. Bartók's extensive work in collecting and studying folk music from across Central Europe enriched his compositions, which span orchestral works, string quartets, piano solos, and vocal settings of folk songs. His legacy endures as one of the most significant contributors to classical and neoclassical music, celebrated for his innovative approach and deep cultural roots. Bartók passed away in New York in 1945, leaving behind a rich musical heritage that continues to inspire and enchant audiences worldwide.
