      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the captivating world of Béla Bartók with this exceptional live recording, released on January 1, 2008, by Archipel. This album showcases two of Bartók's most celebrated works: "The Miraculous Mandarin, Op. 19, Sz. 73" and "Concerto for Orchestra, Sz. 116." Spanning a duration of one hour and five minutes, the album is a testament to Bartók's innovative spirit and mastery of classical and neoclassical styles.

"The Miraculous Mandarin" is a pantomime in one act, originally composed as a ballet score. This live performance brings to life the dramatic and rhythmic intensity of Bartók's music, as the story unfolds through its eight distinct sections. From the initial curtain rise to the final dramatic conclusion, the City Of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Sir Simon Rattle, delivers a powerful and engaging interpretation.

Following this, the album presents Bartók's "Concerto for Orchestra, Sz. 116," a work that redefines the traditional concerto form. Composed for a large symphony orchestra, this piece is a journey through a variety of moods and textures, from the playful "Giuoco delle coppie" to the somber "Elegia," and culminating in the energetic "Finale." The live performance captures the essence of Bartók's innovative use of orchestration and his unique blend of Eastern European folk influences with modernist techniques.

This album is a must for any fan of classical music, offering a rare opportunity to experience Bartók's works in a live setting. The dynamic performances by the City Of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Sir Simon Rattle, bring a new dimension to these timeless pieces, making this a truly memorable listening experience.

      About Béla Bartók

Béla Bartók, born in 1881 in Nagyszentmiklós, Hungary, was a towering figure in 20th-century music, renowned as a composer, pianist, and ethnomusicologist. His deep connection to Hungarian and Central European folk music infused his compositions with a unique and captivating flavor, making him one of Hungary's greatest composers alongside Franz Liszt. Bartók's prodigious talent was evident from a young age; by four, he could play forty tunes on the piano, and by five, he began formal piano lessons with his mother. His musical journey took him from his early studies in Pozsony to becoming a distinguished teacher at the Zeneakadémia. Bartók's extensive work in collecting and studying folk music from across Central Europe enriched his compositions, which span orchestral works, string quartets, piano solos, and vocal settings of folk songs. His legacy endures as one of the most significant contributors to classical and neoclassical music, celebrated for his innovative approach and deep cultural roots. Bartók passed away in New York in 1945, leaving behind a rich musical heritage that continues to inspire and enchant audiences worldwide.
