      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the captivating world of classical piano with Julius Katchen's exquisite album, featuring the masterful compositions of Béla Bartók and Maurice Ravel. Released in 2011 under Decca Music Group Ltd., this album is a testament to Katchen's virtuosity and the timeless appeal of these iconic works.

The album showcases two renowned piano concertos: Bartók's Piano Concerto No. 3 and Ravel's Piano Concerto in G Major. Katchen's nuanced interpretation and technical brilliance bring these pieces to life, accompanied by the London Symphony Orchestra under the direction of István Kertész. The collaboration between these artistic giants results in a performance that is both powerful and delicate, showcasing the full range of the piano's expressive capabilities.

Bartók's Piano Concerto No. 3, composed in 1945, is a work of profound depth and complexity. The concerto is divided into three movements: "Allegretto," "Adagio religioso," and "Allegro vivace." Each movement offers a unique exploration of sound and emotion, from the introspective and serene to the energetic and dynamic.

Ravel's Piano Concerto in G Major, completed in 1931, is a masterpiece of French impressionism. The concerto's three movements—"Allegramente," "Adagio assai," and "Presto"—exemplify Ravel's signature style, characterized by its lyrical melodies, intricate rhythms, and rich harmonies. Katchen's performance captures the essence of Ravel's music, highlighting its elegance and sophistication.

With a total duration of 1 hour and 13 minutes, this album is a comprehensive journey through two of the most significant piano concertos in the classical repertoire. Whether you are a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, Julius Katchen's interpretation of Bartók and Ravel's concertos is sure to leave a lasting impression.
