Bartók: Concerto for Orchestra & Viola Concerto - Béla Bartók

      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the captivating world of Béla Bartók with his remarkable compositions, "Concerto for Orchestra" and "Viola Concerto," released under the label Mangora Classical in 2015. This album is a testament to Bartók's genius, showcasing his unique blend of classical and neoclassical styles, with a touch of classical piano elements.

The "Concerto for Orchestra," Sz. 116, is a five-movement masterpiece that takes you on a journey through a variety of moods and tempos. From the serene "Introduzione" to the lively "Finale," each section is a display of orchestral brilliance. Performed by the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Karel Ančerl, this piece is a cornerstone of 20th-century orchestral music.

The "Viola Concerto," Sz. 120, is one of Bartók's last compositions, completed posthumously. This three-movement concerto is a profound exploration of the viola's expressive range, with Jaroslav Karlovsky delivering a stellar performance alongside the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. The "Adagio religioso" is particularly notable for its spiritual depth and lyrical beauty.

Born in Nagyszentmiklós, Austria-Hungary (now Sânnicolau Mare, Romania), Bartók was a child prodigy on the piano and went on to become one of the most influential composers of the 20th century. His works are known for their rhythmic complexity, folk music influences, and innovative use of tonality.

This album is a must-listen for any classical music enthusiast, offering a rich and rewarding experience that highlights Bartók's enduring legacy. With a total runtime of 59 minutes, it's a compact yet comprehensive collection of some of Bartók's most significant orchestral works.

      About Béla Bartók

Béla Bartók, born in 1881 in Nagyszentmiklós, Hungary, was a towering figure in 20th-century music, renowned as a composer, pianist, and ethnomusicologist. His deep connection to Hungarian and Central European folk music infused his compositions with a unique and captivating flavor, making him one of Hungary's greatest composers alongside Franz Liszt. Bartók's prodigious talent was evident from a young age; by four, he could play forty tunes on the piano, and by five, he began formal piano lessons with his mother. His musical journey took him from his early studies in Pozsony to becoming a distinguished teacher at the Zeneakadémia. Bartók's extensive work in collecting and studying folk music from across Central Europe enriched his compositions, which span orchestral works, string quartets, piano solos, and vocal settings of folk songs. His legacy endures as one of the most significant contributors to classical and neoclassical music, celebrated for his innovative approach and deep cultural roots. Bartók passed away in New York in 1945, leaving behind a rich musical heritage that continues to inspire and enchant audiences worldwide.
