      Album Details

Barney Wilen, the French jazz virtuoso known for his distinctive tenor and soprano saxophone playing, presents a captivating journey through the realms of French jazz, free jazz, hard bop, and beyond with his latest album, "Barney Wilen Quintet." Released on February 22, 2020, under Fresh Sound Records, this 11-track collection is a testament to Wilen's enduring legacy and innovative spirit.

The album opens with "Moving Out," setting the stage for a dynamic exploration of jazz's diverse styles. Wilen is joined by a stellar ensemble featuring Al Levitt, Hubert Fol, Lloyd Thompson, and Nico Buninck, each track showcasing their collective mastery and individual brilliance. From the cerebral "Brainstorm" to the hauntingly beautiful "Crystal Ball," the album weaves a tapestry of sound that is both intellectually stimulating and deeply moving.

"Lloyd's Brother's Tune" offers a glimpse into Wilen's compositional prowess, while "Spracklin'" and "Up in Alsace" highlight the quintet's ability to blend traditional jazz elements with modern sensibilities. The album's midpoint, "Dink" and "Blue Hubert," provides a moment of introspection, showcasing Wilen's emotive playing and the band's tight-knit chemistry.

The latter half of the album continues to impress with tracks like "The Office," a nod to Wilen's playful side, and "Papiermento," a complex piece that demonstrates the quintet's technical prowess. The album closes with "Snakes," leaving the listener with a sense of satisfaction and a desire to revisit the journey.

"Barney Wilen Quintet" is not just an album; it's a celebration of jazz's rich history and a bold step into its future. With its engaging compositions, exceptional performances, and innovative spirit, it stands as a testament to Barney Wilen's enduring influence and the timeless appeal of jazz.
